Contact point GFO Klostergarten

With their central location, the neighborhood rooms in the former monastery are an optimal meeting place for all citizens. A new elevator, a bus stop and driving services will ensure accessibility for less mobile citizens. Volunteers also play a major role in the projects. Support for civic engagement is intended to strengthen aid structures and social networks. Fundraising is used to collect grants for the planned projects.

The quarter

The term "neighborhood" comes from urban development. It means more than just housing. Neighborhood work brings together people from different social and cultural backgrounds and generations: Neighbors, communities, associations, administration, politics. In this way, interests are bundled and realized.

The neighborhood management of the GFO Klostergarten focuses on the connection and networking of the citizens of Merten of all generations, of all origins, whether newly arrived or original Merten residents, in order to support them, to facilitate and enrich their lives.

In Merten, there is an active club and community life that provides important opportunities for people to meet. But membership numbers are declining, and the institutions that are so important to Merten are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit new members.

Shopping facilities, medical and health care, nursing and support services are available. These offerings should therefore be strengthened and networked so that they can continue to provide a good life in Bornheim-Merten.

With the Klostergarten Bornheim-Merten, the Society of the Franciscan Sisters of Olpe (GFO) has established a location that is open and integrated into the village of Merten, making mutual participation possible: on the one hand for the residents of the Klostergarten itself, but also for the people in the surrounding area.

The former hospital cafeteria - the KulTür - has become a meeting place that is designed and filled with life together with the neighborhood. The needs of all generations and life situations are decisive.

The space can accommodate 120 spectators and has a café and seminar facilities. Attached are a studio, a kitchen and a 40m² group and consultation room. The monastery chapel is available for spiritual offerings and retreat.

The KulTür in the old monastery is a large barrier-free event space with a counter and serving area as well as an attached kitchen.

Possible uses:

  • with theater seating and variable stage for theater performances, readings or meetings,
  • with tables and available technology (projector, screen, audio package and stage lighting) as a seminar room or conference hall,
  • with available café tables, sofas, armchairs and bar tables for receptions, brunches, wine tastings or other tasting events,
  • for private parties,
  • for art exhibitions and markets
  • for sports events such as gymnastics, yoga, rehabilitation sports, dance or TaiChi.

Another kitchen as well as outdoor equipment (pavilions, beer tent sets) for the forecourt of the KulTür are available. A local caterer is available for large and small events.

More rooms

In the neighboring convent there are additional rooms for counseling, group work or artistic/craft activities:

  • Studio
  • Counseling office
  • Old convent chapel
  • Training room

The studio and counseling office can be rented. The amount of the room rent depends on the type of use:

  • free of charge for all events of the quarter
  • for Bornheim organizers and network partners of the Quarter (local associations, interest groups, VHS, etc.) at a special rate,
  • for private use,
  • for corporate events.

The former therapy pool of the hospital is operated by the SSV Merten with numerous offers and expands the offer in the GFO Klostergarten.
